"Lucía", USA:
My relationship with the music is purely emotional. I
don't have thoughts about it, I have feelings.
What I don't like: music that is played haphazardly, failing to create a
"mood".
My pet peeve: to get up to dance with my favourite
Di Sarli partner, only to have Biagi played as the next song.
Another pet
peeve: DJs and dancers that like or dislike the music according to sound
quality. They don't know what they are missing. As my little son would
say, "They judge a book by its cover".
Favourites: Instrumental Pugliese of all decades, to dance with somebody
that is dancing with me and not pour la gallerie. I have no patience for
peacocks. Di Sarli both instrumental and not (I love Duran), D'Arienzo
instrumental and with Maure, Troilo, depending on my mood, D'Agostino/Vargas
(I am in a D'Agostino/Vargas phase), Calo with all singers, Tanturi both
with Castillo and with Campos, Canaro (I love Poema), Fresedo/Ray, Canaro
milongas and valses, D'Arienzo valses, Enrique Rodriguez. Out on a limb
now...I love to dance to Goyeneche, I have to have the right partner. As a
student of Norma Gomez Tomassi and Ernesto Carmona, I have danced tango to
almost anything. One that comes to mind, Nostalgias by Eugenia Leon. I was
crying when the song was over.
What I like to do with the music: as a dancer, to get lost in it. As a DJ,
to try to get people in a "dance trance" and unable to stop dancing.
The nicest compliment: Recently, for the first time in the last couple
of years, we had a surplus of leaders. As a hostess, I was very busy trying
to make sure that all the leaders danced, and at the same time keeping up
with the DJing part. One favourite leader needed to
leave, was going out of town the next day. We had had some nice milonga and
vals tandas. He asked for a tango tanda before he left: I played Calo. We said our good byes around midnight. All of a sudden, I realize,
at 1:30, he is still there, sitting at the bar, not dancing since there aren't
enough women. I went to him and asked how come he was still around. He
answered: "it's the music, I just can't leave."
